    Background

    Membrane-spanning 4-domains subfamily A member 4A (MS4A4A) is a member of a class of MS4A genes encoding four-transmembrane-spanning proteins (1,2). MS4A4A expression is enriched in human and mouse macrophages (3,4). Its expression in macrophages may be induced during macrophage development and activation (4). MS4A4A, via its interaction with the β-glucan receptor, Dectin-1, may contribute to macrophage-mediated production of proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species by activation of the Syk signaling pathway (4). Interestingly, MS4A4A, as well as other members of the MS4A gene cluster, is genetically linked to late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, suggesting that MS4A4A-dependent macrophage/microglia might contribute to neurodegenerative disease progression (5,6).
